In 2016, an estimated 17.9 million people died from cardiovascular diseases (CVDs); they represented 31% of all global deaths that year. Of these deaths, 85% were due to a heart attack and/or stroke.

Cardiovascular diseases account for the second-largest number of non-communicable disease after mental illnesses. The drugs used to treat these diseases are some of the leading causes of adverse reactions and high costs related to ADRs in hospital admissions.

In the past, pharmacogenomics testing for cardiovascular drugs has been difficult to integrate into clinical practices due to acute cases, complex pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of drugs, and other factors and comorbidities that may contribute to adverse reactions.

Certain biomarkers such as CYP2C19 and SLCO1B1 has been know to have associations with some medications in CVDs.
